Discovering Mount Chider

Mount Chider was carefully mapped by scientists. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) did this work. They used information from ground surveys. They also used special air photos taken by the United States Navy. These photos helped them create detailed maps. The mapping happened between 1960 and 1964.

How Mount Chider Got Its Name

The mountain was named by a special group. This group is called the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. They chose to name it after Lieutenant Commander Thomas J. Chider. He was a brave helicopter pilot. Lieutenant Commander Chider flew with the U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6. He was based at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. His work was part of an important mission called Operation Deep Freeze in 1968. This operation helps support scientific research in Antarctica.
