It sits in a beautiful area, surrounded by tall mountains and stunning scenery. This aerodrome is mainly used for special flights, like scenic tours over the mountains and glaciers, rather than regular passenger trips.
Discover Mount Cook Aerodrome
Mount Cook Aerodrome is a key spot for exploring the amazing Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. It's like a gateway to adventure in the Southern Alps. The airport is managed by Aoraki Mount Cook Airport Ltd.
What is an Aerodrome?
An aerodrome is a place where aircraft can take off and land. It's similar to an airport but often smaller. Mount Cook Aerodrome has a paved runway, which is a special road for planes. This runway is about 1,473 meters (4,833 feet) long. The airport is also quite high up, at an elevation of 2,153 feet (about 656 meters) above sea level.
Flights and History
For many years, Mount Cook Aerodrome had regular commercial flights. These were flights that carried passengers on a set schedule. However, these regular flights stopped in 2002.
A few years later, there was a short period when commercial flights returned. From December 23, 2012, to January 27, 2013, a company called Mount Cook Airline (which is part of Air New Zealand) offered flights. They flew three times a week from Mount Cook to Christchurch and Queenstown. These cities are popular travel spots in New Zealand.
However, Air New Zealand decided not to continue these flights for the next summer season (2013/2014). This was because not enough people were buying tickets for these routes. Since then, the aerodrome has focused more on private and scenic flights, which are very popular with tourists wanting to see the incredible landscapes from above.
