Mount Healthy is a small, unincorporated community. It's located in Jackson Township, Bartholomew County, in the state of Indiana. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
A Look Back in Time
Mount Healthy has an interesting past. A post office opened here in 1850. It helped people send and receive mail. This post office served the community for many years. It closed down in 1888.
The community got its name for two main reasons. First, it was located on a high piece of land. This gave it a "lofty elevation." Second, it had natural springs. These springs provided mineral water. People used to visit Mount Healthy just to buy this special water.
In 1851, a man named William Howbert planned out the town. He created 18 building lots. The streets were quite wide, about 88 feet across. Mount Healthy was meant to be an important place for learning. It was home to the Mt. Healthy Seminary. A seminary is a school, often for religious studies.
The spring water business grew popular. Water from the springs was bottled. An Indianapolis company helped distribute it. At its busiest time, Mount Healthy had about 50 people living there.
