Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mount Hercules is a big mountain with a flat top in Antarctica. You can find it between Mount Aeolus and Mount Jason. It's part of the Olympus Range in Victoria Land. This mountain is located at 77°29′S 161°26′E / 77.483°S 161.433°E / -77.483; 161.433.

Explorers from the Victoria University of Wellington Antarctic Expedition named Mount Hercules in 1958–59. They named it after Hercules, a very strong hero from ancient Greek mythology.

Exploring Mount Hercules

Mount Hercules is a fascinating place in Antarctica. It stands out because of its flat top, which is unusual for a mountain. It's surrounded by other interesting landforms.

Marsh Cirque: A Bowl of Ice

On the southern side of Mount Hercules, there's a place called Marsh Cirque. A cirque is like a big, bowl-shaped hollow in the side of a mountain, often carved by glaciers. This cirque is about 1.9 kilometers (1 nautical mile) wide and has a glacier inside it.

The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named Marsh Cirque in 2004. They named it after Bruce D. Marsh. He is a geologist who studied rocks and the Earth at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Bruce Marsh's Antarctic Work

Bruce D. Marsh spent seven field seasons, from 1995 to 2005, working in Antarctica. He was part of the United States Antarctic Program. He studied "basement sills" in the McMurdo Dry Valleys. A sill is a flat sheet of rock that forms when magma (molten rock) pushes its way between layers of older rock. His work helped scientists understand more about how the Earth's crust is formed in this icy region.

Nearby Features

Mount Hercules is also close to other important places in Antarctica. The Nakai Snowfield separates Mount Hercules from Mount Jason. To the north, you'll find Harris Ledge, which is a flat, shelf-like rock formation. Just west of Harris Ledge is Fritsen Valley. These features all add to the unique landscape around Mount Hercules.
