Mount Hermon Female Sanctuary was a special school for young women in Clinton, Mississippi. It was open from 1875 to 1924. This school was important because it was one of the first places where Black women could get a higher education in the Southern United States.

History of the School

How It Started

The school was founded in 1875 by a brave woman named Sarah Ann Dickey. She wanted to create a place where young Black women could learn and grow. Sarah Ann Dickey had gone to a school called Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, and she used it as a model for Mount Hermon.

Helping Students Learn

For many years, the school received money from the Slater Fund. This fund helped educate formerly enslaved people, often called "Freedman," after the American Civil War. This support was very important for the school's early years, lasting until 1891.

Why It Closed

Mount Hermon Female Sanctuary closed its doors in 1924. It was closed by the American Missionary Association, which was an organization that supported the school. This group had its own college in Tougaloo, Mississippi, and decided to focus its efforts there.
