Mount Lubentia is a very old and important house in Largo, Maryland. It's a beautiful brick house found in Prince George's County, Maryland. The house shows a mix of two old building styles: Georgian and Federal. It was likely built around 1760. Later, in the late 1790s, Enoch Magruder and his son Dennis made many changes to it.

A Home with History

From 1771 to 1773, a man named Reverend Jonathan Boucher lived at Mount Lubentia. He was a teacher and described the house as "a very tolerable house." His students even called it "Castle Magruder."

One of Boucher's most famous students was John Parke Custis. He was the step-son of George Washington, who later became the first President of the United States. Jackie Custis lived at Mount Lubentia while he was studying with Boucher. George and Martha Washington, his step-parents, visited the house several times. George Washington even wrote about these visits in his diary.

A family member, Forrest Bowie, wrote in the 1930s that Dennis Magruder was born at Mount Lubentia in 1759. Dennis was given the house and land by his father when he got married in 1779. At that time, Dennis was serving in the American Revolutionary War. During recent repairs, workers found clues about how the house looked even earlier. This shows how much it changed over time.

Other Buildings on the Property

There are other interesting old buildings at Mount Lubentia too. One is an eight-sided wooden building called a dairy. A dairy was used to store milk and make butter or cheese. This dairy was moved to Mount Lubentia in the 1970s from another old farm nearby called "Graden." It's a great example of an old farm building from the 1700s.

You can also find an 18th-century corncrib on the property. A corncrib is a building used to store corn. Records from 1798 mention this corncrib.

Mount Lubentia was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This means it's recognized as an important historical site in the United States.
