Mount Manchester is a tall mountain peak in the Dead Mountains. It is the highest point in this mountain range. You can find it in the very northeastern part of San Bernardino County, California. This area is part of the Mojave Desert, a large and dry region.

Exploring the Dead Mountains Wilderness

Mount Manchester is the highest point within a special protected area. This area is called the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) wilderness. A wilderness area is a place kept wild and natural. It is protected from development and human changes. The BLM helps manage and protect these lands.

Where are the Dead Mountains?

The Dead Mountains are located in a unique spot. To the east, they are next to the Colorado River. This is a very famous and long river. To the west, the mountains border a dry riverbed called Piute Wash. This wash is part of the Piute Valley. A "wash" is a dry streambed that only has water after heavy rain.

Water Flow in Piute Wash

The Piute Wash usually flows south. But when it reaches the southern end of the Dead Mountains, it turns east. It then travels about 8 miles (13 km) before joining the Colorado River. This shows how water, even in a desert, finds its way to larger rivers.
