Mount Merino, Kentucky is a small place, not officially a town, located near Irvington in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.
History of Mount Merino
The story of Mount Merino began in 1832. That year, two brothers, Dr. Benedict Wathen and Dr. Richard M. Wathen, bought the land. They helped start a special school there in 1838. This school was a Roman Catholic seminary, which is a place where people study to become priests.
The seminary closed its doors in 1843. Later, in 1854, the Mount Merino farm became home to a church. It was called the Holy Guardian Angel Catholic Church. This church was a "mission" of St. Theresa Parish in Rhodelia. A mission church is a smaller church that is part of a larger, main church.
By 1930, the old church needed a lot of repairs. So, people decided to build a new church in Irvington. This new location was also closer to where more people lived.
