Mount Murray is a hill on the Isle of Man. It stands about 222 meters (728 feet) tall. You can find it in the northern part of Santon, close to the areas of Marown and Braddan.

The hill is named after Lord Henry Murray, who was an important leader on the Isle of Man. People sometimes call it The Mount. Long ago, it was known as Cronk Glass, which means 'green hill'. Today, Mount Murray has a forest called Chibbanagh Plantation and part of the Mount Murray Golf Club.

History of Mount Murray

Long ago, Mount Murray was called Ais Hólt. This name meant 'Holt's Hill'. Over time, the name changed to things like Ash hole or Ashole. Families with similar names lived in the Castletown area many centuries ago.

The Mount Murray Estate

In the early 1700s, a merchant from Dublin named Richard McGwire bought the hill and the land around it. He wanted to use this common land for his own estate.

The estate was later sold many times. In 1793, Lord Henry Murray bought it. He was the fourth son of the John Murray, 3rd Duke of Atholl and an important leader on the Isle of Man. The estate became his home and was known as the Mount Murray Estate. It was about 4 miles (6.4 km) from Douglas.

A special stone in the mansion's walls recorded that Lord Henry Murray named his estate "Moor Hall."

Mount Murray Hotel and Resort

After Lord Murray owned it, the mansion changed hands several times. By 1885, it was in poor condition. A man named Mr. S. Marsden bought it and worked to make it grand again. He turned it into a hotel. He changed how the building looked from the outside. He also added a tower to the front, which offered wide views of the estate.

In 1958, Alec O'Brien bought the original Mount Murray Hotel. He made big changes and reopened it as the Alex Inn. The Alex Inn closed in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Most of its buildings were then taken down.

Later, in 1991, a company planned to build a "Resort Village" on the site of the old Alex Inn. This new development was built to help tourism.

In November 2013, a fire broke out at the Mount Murray Hotel and Country Club. The hotel was being changed at the time. The fire caused a lot of damage, and the hotel closed.

In February 2016, a company from the Isle of Man called Comis Holdings bought the site. They plan to reopen Mount Murray as a place for sports and fun activities.

Landscape and Ancient Sites

Close to Mount Murray, you can find two interesting ancient sites: The Broogh Fort and The Braaid.

The fifth fairway of the Mount Murray golf course is built on an ancient burial ground. This burial ground later became the site of a small old church called a keeill. This church was built sometime after the 800s. The area then became known as Speke Farm.

In 2006, a TV show about archaeology called Time Team dug up parts of the keeill and some of the burials around it. The first time the keeill at Speke was mentioned was on a Mount Murray Estate map from 1800. This map showed a small, rectangular building in an enclosed area, marked as 'old chapel'.
