Mount Ollivier is a mountain in New Zealand. It stands tall at 1,933 m (6,342 ft). This peak is found in the Canterbury area. It's part of the Sealy Range of mountains. The mountain is about 2.5 km (1.6 mi) west of Mount Cook Village. It was named after a climber named Arthur Ollivier. He passed away in 1897.
Sir Edmund Hillary's First Big Climb
Mount Ollivier holds a special place in history. It was the first major mountain climb for Sir Edmund Hillary. He climbed it in 1939. Sir Edmund Hillary later became famous for being the first person to reach the top of Mount Everest.
After Sir Edmund Hillary passed away in 2008, some people wanted to rename Mount Ollivier. They suggested calling it Mount Hillary to remember him. However, Arthur Ollivier's family did not agree with this idea. So, the mountain kept its original name.
Easy Access to the Summit
Today, Mount Ollivier is one of the easiest mountains to reach in Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. This is because a special walking path was built. This path leads to Mueller Hut, which is a mountain hut not far below the summit.
The last part of the climb, from Mueller Hut to the very top, is not a difficult climb. It is more like a rock scramble. This means you need to use your hands and feet to climb over rocks.
