Mount Sourabaya facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mount Sourabaya is a mountain located on Bristol Island in the South Sandwich Islands. It stands about 915 meters (3,002 feet) tall. This mountain is found about 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) northwest of another mountain called Mount Darnley.

How it Got its Name

Mount Sourabaya was named in 1971 by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC). It was named after a whaling factory ship called Sourabaya. In 1935, people on this ship saw an eruption from Bristol Island. Because of this event, the mountain was given the ship's name.

Volcanic Activity

Bristol Island is a volcanic island, and Mount Sourabaya is part of its volcanic system. The most recent time Mount Sourabaya erupted was between April 19 and April 23, 2016. This shows that the mountain is still an active volcano.
