A Look Back: Mount Tabor's History

Early Days

People first started living in Mount Tabor around 1830. For a while, it was also known simply as Tabor. A post office opened there in 1850, helping people send and receive letters. It stayed open for about 13 years, closing in 1863.

Standing Up Against Slavery

The time before the American Civil War (which started in 1861) is called the Antebellum period. During this time, Mount Tabor was known as an "Oberlin town." Oberlin was a place famous for its strong feelings against slavery. This meant that the people of Mount Tabor also strongly opposed slavery.

They were very dedicated to "the cause of free Kansas." This refers to a difficult time called Bleeding Kansas, when people were fighting over whether the new territory of Kansas would allow slavery or be a free state. The residents of Mount Tabor supported Kansas becoming a free state, meaning no slavery there. This shows they were part of the "abolitionist" movement, which worked to end slavery in the United States.
