Famous Buildings to See

Many buildings here are very old and important. For example, the John Shaver House was built in 1818. It shows the Federal style. The Shapiro Theater, built in 1915, is another cool spot. Imagine watching movies there long ago!

Other notable buildings include:

  • The T.A. Appleby Store and House, from around 1870.
  • The Kenmar Hotel, which was built in the 1880s and updated in 1904.
  • The Penn Central National Bank, built in 1916.
  • Peduzzi's and the Weller Building, from 1913-1914.
  • The Pennsylvania Railroad Freight Depot, built in 1914.

Important Churches and Schools

The district also has several historic churches. St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church was built in 1904-1905. The First United Methodist Church was built later, in 1925-1926. St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church dates back to 1912-1913.

The Mount Union Elementary School, built in 1923-1924, is also part of this district. You can also find the U.S. Post Office, which was built in 1936.

Special Sites and Structures

Beyond buildings, the district includes important sites. One is the I.O.O.F. community cemetery. It was started in 1872. There is also the former Victoria Park. These places add to the district's historical value.

The Harbison-Walker Refractories Company complex is also located within this district. It is so important that it is listed separately on the National Register.
