What is Mount Valley?

Mount Valley is a quiet spot in Alberta, known for its beautiful natural surroundings. The name "Mount Valley" actually describes the area perfectly! It's a valley located near mountains, which makes for some amazing views. Even though it's a small place, it has an interesting history.

How Mount Valley Began

The story of Mount Valley really started with a store. In 1930, two people named Colonel Lyle Tennyson and Cephas Tennyson, who were from Beaverlodge, Alberta, decided to open the Mount Valley Store. This store became the center of the community. It was a place where people could buy supplies and meet their neighbors.

A Growing Community: School and Post Office

As more people moved to the area, Mount Valley started to grow.

  • A School for Kids: In January 1932, a school district was set up, called West End School District 4592. Soon after, a school was built about two miles west of the store. It was a sturdy log building with a stone foundation, ready for students to learn and play.
  • Sending Letters: On January 8, 1938, something important was added to the Mount Valley Store: a post office! By this time, the Elliott family owned the store. Elva Elliott Lingrell, who was a daughter in the family, became the postmistress. This meant people could send and receive letters and packages right there in Mount Valley.

Changes Over Time

Like many small communities, Mount Valley saw some changes over the years.

  • School Days End: The school, which had been a hub for children, closed its doors in 1935. This meant kids likely had to travel further for their education.
  • A Fiery Farewell: In 1951, a big event changed Mount Valley. The original store and post office building sadly burned down. The post office officially closed on September 16, 1951, marking the end of an era for this small but important community hub.
