Discovering Beaverlodge's Past
The town of Beaverlodge got its name from the Beaverlodge River. The Beaver First Nation people called this river Uz-i-pa, which means "temporary lodge." The first European-Canadian settlers arrived here in 1909.
The Old Radar Station
In 1953, a special Canadian Forces Station was built near the town. This was a radar station that watched for aircraft. It was part of NORAD, an agreement between Canada and the U.S. to protect North American airspace. American military members first ran the station. In the mid-1960s, the Royal Canadian Air Force took over. The station closed on April 1, 1988, when the Cold War ended. All the buildings were taken down in the mid-1990s.
