The Story of Wembley: How It Began

The land around Wembley was first measured and mapped in 1909. This was done to prepare for new settlers, who started arriving in 1910.

Building the Railway and a New Town

In 1916, a survey for a railway line was finished, connecting Grande Prairie to Pouce Coupe. The actual town area of Wembley was mapped out in 1923. The railway finally arrived in 1924, which was a big deal for the area!

The current town of Wembley is about 7 kilometers (4.5 miles) south of an older settlement called Lake Saskatoon. When the railway came in 1924, many buildings from Lake Saskatoon were moved. They were pulled across snowy trails to their new spots in Wembley. The name "Wembley" was chosen by the Lake Saskatoon Board of Trade. They picked it because of the British Empire Exposition, a big fair held in Wembley, England, at that time.

Early Days and Growth

The first post office in Wembley opened in November 1924. The very first postmaster, or person in charge of the post office, was RB Sinclair.

Wembley officially became a village on January 3, 1928. Later, it grew even more and became a town on August 1, 1980.
