History of Mount Vernon A.M.E. Church

The church building is a simple, one-room structure. It is made of logs and has only one story. The logs were put together using a special building method called "dovetail notching." This technique makes the corners strong and fit together tightly.

This church was built in 1848 by people who had recently become free from slavery. It was a very important place for the community. The Mount Vernon A.M.E. Church was the first church for Black people in Monroe County. Besides being a place of worship, it also served as a school for the community.
