Scientific classification
Genus:
Chamaebatia
Species:
foliolosa

The plant known as Chamaebatia foliolosa has two common names: mountain misery and bearclover. It is an aromatic, evergreen shrub that belongs to the rose family. This special plant is found only in the mountains of California. It grows in forests where cone-bearing trees like pines are common.

Long ago, the Miwok tribe had their own name for this plant: kit-kit-dizze. They used it as a natural remedy for many health issues. These included colds, coughs, and even skin conditions like chicken pox and measles.

What Does Mountain Misery Look Like?

Stems and Leaves

The stems of the mountain misery plant are covered in dark brown bark. Its leaves are quite unique! They are described as "3-pinnate." This means a large leaf is made up of smaller leaflets, which are then made up of even tinier leaflets.

These fern-like leaves can grow up to 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) long. They have a frilly look and are covered with sticky spots called glands.

Flowers

The flowers of the mountain misery plant look a bit like small roses. They have round, white petals that are very pretty. In the center of each flower, you will see a yellow part surrounded by many stamens. Stamens are the parts of a flower that produce pollen.

Mountain Misery's Special Powers

This plant has a very interesting ability! It can perform something called nitrogen fixation. This is unusual for a plant in the rose family.

Nitrogen fixation means the plant can take nitrogen gas from the air and change it into a form that helps it grow. This process is very important for healthy soil and plant life.

Important Things to Know

Sticky Sap

The mountain misery plant produces a black, sticky gum. If you walk through areas where this plant grows, this gum might stick to your clothes.

Fire Risk

Because of its natural resin, mountain misery is also very flammable. This means it can catch fire easily, especially in dry conditions.
