The mountain stream tree frog (Ranoidea barringtonensis) is a small tree frog that lives in Australia. It is also known by other names like the northern tops frog, leaf green river tree frog, or Barrington tops frog. This frog makes its home in the cool, wet areas of New South Wales.

What Does It Look Like?

This little frog is quite small, growing to about 3.7 centimeters long. That's roughly the length of your thumb! It has a bright green body with some dark spots. You might also notice a dark stripe that runs behind its eye. Its belly, or underside, is usually white.

Where Does It Live?

The mountain stream tree frog lives in the eastern part of New South Wales, Australia. It prefers to live in cooler, higher places, often near mountain streams. This is why it's called the "mountain stream" frog! It likes areas where there's plenty of moisture and places to hide among plants.

What's in a Name?

Sometimes, scientists don't always agree on the exact name for an animal. For this frog, there's a discussion about whether it should be called barringtonensis or pearsoniana. Some scientists believe that this frog and the Pearson's green tree frog are two completely different species. Others think they might be the same or very closely related. This kind of debate is common in science as new information is discovered!

Conservation Status

The mountain stream tree frog is currently listed as a species of Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This means that, for now, its population is stable and it is not considered to be at high risk of disappearing. However, scientists continue to monitor frog populations to make sure they stay healthy.
