Movsas Feigins (born February 28, 1908 – died August 11, 1950) was a talented chess player from Latvia. He became a chess master, which means he was very skilled at the game.

A Young Chess Star

Movsas Feigins was born in a city called Dvinsk, which is now Daugavpils in Latvia. Back then, it was part of the Russian Empire. He quickly showed his talent for chess. In 1930, he won a chess tournament in Riga. In 1932, he became the champion of Latvia in chess after winning a special play-off match.

He continued to play in many important tournaments. In 1936 and 1937, he played in Hastings, England. He also competed in the Kemeri 1937 chess tournament. In Brussels, he took second place in a tournament. He also earned second and third places in tournaments held in Riga. In March 1939, he played in another big tournament in Kemeri and Riga.

Playing for His Country

Movsas Feigins proudly represented Latvia in several Chess Olympiads. These are like the Olympic Games for chess, where teams from different countries compete.

  • In 1930, he played at the third board for Latvia in Hamburg.
  • In 1931, he played at the fourth board in Prague.
  • In 1933, he played at the third board in Folkestone.
  • In 1935, he played at the third board in Warsaw.
  • In 1936, he played at the third board in an unofficial Olympiad in Munich.
  • In 1939, he played at the third board in Buenos Aires.

He won two individual medals for his great performance. He earned a bronze medal in 1933 and a silver medal in 1936.

Life in Argentina

In September 1939, a big war called World War II started. Movsas Feigins was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for the 8th Chess Olympiad. Because of the war, he and many other chess players decided to stay in Argentina.

He continued to play chess there. In 1941, he played in the Mar del Plata 1941 chess tournament. He also played in Asunción in 1944. In 1946, he took third place in a tournament in Buenos Aires. Movsas Feigins lived in Argentina until he passed away on August 11, 1950.
