Exploring Moya's Rich History
The northern part of Gran Canaria used to be covered in thick forests. This was especially true during the 15th century. At that time, the Spanish conquest was happening. This means Spain was taking control of the islands.
Ancient Forests and Local Heroes
Today, only two small parts of these old forests remain. They are called the Finca de Osorio and the Tilos de Moya. A brave native chief named Doramas once hid in these forests. He took refuge there after fighting against the Castilian conquerors. Because of him, the area was known as Selva de Doramas, which means "Doramas' Wood."
Life in the Countryside
You can still find old caserios (country-houses) in Moya. These houses are nestled between hills and cliffs. The area is also known for its special medicinal waters. Moya is surrounded by large valleys formed by volcanoes.
The Impressive Church
One of Moya's most famous landmarks is its Neo-Romanesque church. It is called the Iglesia de la Virgen de la Candelaria. This beautiful and grand building was finished in 1957. It has a unique architectural style.
