The Story of MR MIKES
How It All Started
MR MIKES started way back in 1960. The very first restaurant opened its doors in Vancouver, British Columbia, on a street called Granville Street. Two brothers, Bob and Nick Constabaris, created it. They wanted to offer yummy, affordable meals for families.
At first, the restaurant was self-serve, which was pretty unique back then! In the late 1960s, the brothers came up with their famous salad bar. The most popular item on their menu was the Mikeburger. This special burger came on a fresh French loaf with garlic butter and their secret Mike's sauce.
Growing Across Canada
The first restaurant was a big hit, and soon more MR MIKES locations opened. By 1970, there were 50 MR MIKES Steakhouse restaurants. That year, over 250,000 customers enjoyed their meals there! The number of restaurants kept growing. By 1980, there were 69 MR MIKES locations. This was the most restaurants they had ever had.
However, in the early 1980s, the economy slowed down. This caused some of the restaurants to close. But even with these challenges, 49 MR MIKES restaurants were still open in 1985.
In 1995, new owners took over the chain. They wanted to change the idea to a full-service steakhouse. This new plan meant they no longer had the famous salad bar. At that time, there were 21 restaurants in the chain.
Later, in 2006, a company called FDC Brands bought the entire MR MIKES chain. They decided to give it a fresh new look. Then, in 2011, RAMMP Hospitality Brands bought the MR MIKES franchise system.
A New Look: SteakhouseCasual
RAMMP Hospitality Brands worked hard to give MR MIKES a new identity. They created a new type of dining experience called "SteakhouseCasual." The first restaurant with this new look opened in Prince George. Other locations like Quesnel and Mission also got the new style. New cities like Yorkton, Saskatchewan, and Bonnyville, Alberta, also welcomed the SteakhouseCasual concept.
Today, MR MIKES SteakhouseCasual is a full-service restaurant and lounge. They focus on serving high-quality food with friendly service. They offer two different experiences in one place. There's a restaurant side for dining and a lounge area called the urbanLODGE. Besides their well-known Canada AAA steaks and Mikeburgers, they also serve salads, pastas, and seafood dishes.
What's on the Menu?
While hamburgers and steaks are still very popular, the restaurants no longer have a salad bar. This change happened in 2015.
