History of Mud Lick
The name "Mud Lick" likely comes from a stream in the area. This stream was probably salty, and animals would often drink from it. When many animals drank, they would make the ground muddy.
What is a Mineral Lick?
A "mineral lick" is a place where animals go to lick the ground. The ground there has important salts or other minerals. Animals need these minerals for their health. When many animals lick the same spot, it can become muddy. This is how the name "Mud Lick" might have started.
Kentucky has other places named after these natural licks. For example, Big Bone Lick is a famous spot in Boone County, Kentucky. Another community in Monroe County is called "Sulphur Lick" because of a similar natural feature. A "Large Sulphur Lick" was even noted in a military survey in 1797 near Flippin.
A post office served the Mud Lick community for many years. It operated from 1853 until the 1980s.
