Park History and Names
Who Was Ferdinand von Mueller?
The park is named after a very important person named Ferdinand von Mueller. He was a German-Australian botanist, which means he studied plants. In the mid-1800s, he explored Australia and found hundreds of new plant species. He also encouraged others to explore the country. The local council, called the Subiaco Municipal Council, officially named the park after him in July 1906.
A Temporary Name Change
During a time of war, in December 1916, the park's name was changed. It became Kitchener Park because of feelings about the war at that time. Other nearby streets also had their names changed. For example, Mueller Road became Roberts Road, and Ferdinand Street became Winthrop Avenue in Nedlands. Today, Mueller Park is about 4.3 hectares in size.
Returning to the Original Name
Many years later, in 1981, the park got its original name back. This happened when the Subiaco Oval, which is next to the park, finished a big renovation. The park has been known as Mueller Park ever since.
