Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Muggle-Wump is a fictional character created by Roald Dahl. He is a type of monkey who appears in some of Dahl's popular children's books. Sometimes, "the Muggle-Wumps" refers to his whole family.

You can find a Muggle-Wump in The Enormous Crocodile. Another Muggle-Wump, with his family, is in The Twits. A character who looks like a Muggle-Wump also shows up in The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me.

In The Enormous Crocodile and The Twits, Muggle-Wump helps to get back at the bad characters. But in The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, he is a happy and safe character.

Muggle-Wump in The Enormous Crocodile

In The Enormous Crocodile, Muggle-Wump tries to talk to the tricky crocodile. He tells the crocodile that eating children is wrong. The crocodile gets angry and tries to bite Muggle-Wump.

The crocodile bites the tree Muggle-Wump is in, almost catching him. Muggle-Wump gets his revenge by following the crocodile. He stops the crocodile from catching any children.

This makes the Enormous Crocodile even angrier. But the crocodile is stopped by the Roly-Poly Bird and Trunky the Elephant. They throw the Enormous Crocodile into the sun.

Muggle-Wump in The Twits

In The Twits, Muggle-Wump has a wife and children. They are treated very badly by Mr and Mrs Twit. The Twits used to train circus animals.

The Twits force the Muggle-Wumps to balance on their heads. They also make them walk on their hands. If they don't obey, Mrs Twit hits them with her walking stick. Sometimes, Muggle-Wump's children faint because blood rushes to their heads.

When they are not performing, the Muggle-Wumps are kept in a cage. This cage is above the Twits' garden. In the garden, Mr Twit has a dead tree. He puts glue on it to trap birds for his Bird Pie. The monkeys try to warn the birds, but the birds do not understand their language. So, the birds are always caught.

The Escape

The Roly-Poly Bird arrives while on holiday in England. This bird can speak both the monkeys' African language and the birds' English language. With the Roly-Poly Bird's help, the Muggle-Wumps rescue the trapped birds.

They then escape from their cage while the Twits are away. The Muggle-Wumps use the same glue to stick all the Twits' living-room furniture to the ceiling.

When the Twits return, two birds drop some glue on their heads. The Twits go into their house and see the furniture on the ceiling. They think their living room has turned upside down. So, they stand on their heads and get stuck to the floor.

Muggle-Wump and his family then return to Africa. The Roly-Poly Bird helps them get there. They likely live happily ever after.

Muggle-Wump in The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me

This monkey might not be a Muggle-Wump, but he looks like one. He calls himself "Me" in the title The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me. He works as a window-washer.

He has a great working relationship with his partners. The Giraffe's neck can stretch very long. The Pelican ("Pelly") has a bill that can fold inwards like a tape measure. The Giraffe acts as the ladder, and the Pelican's deep bill holds the water. The monkey cleans the windows with a cloth. He is also a good singer and dancer.

Catching a Thief

While working for the Duke of Hampshire, the Monkey and the Giraffe see an armed burglar. The burglar is stealing the Duchess' jewellery. The Pelican quickly traps the thief in his huge bill. Later, he gives the thief to the police.

The Duke then lets the monkey and his friends live on his rich estate. Their house is turned back into a sweetshop, which makes the narrator very happy. The monkey ends the story by singing a song.
