Muhammad Ali (born Raymond Patterson on December 23, 1936) is an American drummer. He is well-known for his work in a style of music called free jazz.
Growing Up
Muhammad Ali was born and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When he was young, he and his family, including his father and brothers, became followers of Islam. His older brother, Rashied Ali, was also a talented drummer.
His Musical Journey
Muhammad Ali started making music in the late 1960s. In 1969, he recorded with the famous musician Albert Ayler on albums like Music Is the Healing Force of the Universe. Around that time, many jazz musicians moved to Europe. Muhammad Ali also moved there in 1969, playing with artists such as Frank Wright, Noah Howard, and Bobby Few.
Records show that Ali played on 26 different recording sessions between 1967 and 1983.
In October 2006, Muhammad Ali took part in a special concert in Philadelphia. This concert celebrated the 80th birthday of another legendary musician, John Coltrane. Ali played alongside his brother, pianist Dave Burrell, and bassist Reggie Workman. He also performed with alto saxophonist Noah Howard in the summer of 2008.
In 2010, Ali recorded an album called Planetary Unknown with a group led by David S. Ware. This was his first recording in almost thirty years! He continued to play and record, showing his lasting talent.
