Sardar Muhammad Aslam (Urdu: سردار محمد اسلم) was an important judge and lawyer from Pakistan. He was born on March 10, 1947, and passed away on July 20, 2020. He served in several high courts during his career. He was a judge in the Lahore High Court and later became the first Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court. He also served as a judge in the Supreme Court of Pakistan for a short time.
Education and Early Career
Sardar Muhammad Aslam studied hard to become a lawyer. He earned a master's degree in arts (M.A.). He also completed a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. This education helped him begin his journey in the legal field.
He started working as a lawyer in 1973. By 1976, he was allowed to practice law in the High Court. In 1982, he was approved to work as a lawyer in the Supreme Court. Later, in 2001, he was appointed as a deputy attorney general. This was an important role in the government's legal team.
Becoming a Judge
Sardar Muhammad Aslam became a judge in the Lahore High Court on September 3, 2003. He was first an additional judge and then became a permanent judge in 2004. He worked there until February 6, 2008.
After that, he was chosen to be the very first Chief Justice of the new Islamabad High Court. He took his oath for this role on February 7, 2008. The President of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf, officially appointed him.
A month later, on March 7, 2008, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Pakistan. This appointment was made by the new President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari.
Important Court Decisions
In 2009, the Supreme Court of Pakistan made a big decision. On July 31, 2009, the court ruled that some judicial appointments were not valid. This included appointments made between November 3, 2007, and March 22, 2009.
Because of this ruling, Sardar Muhammad Aslam's appointment to the Supreme Court was found to be unconstitutional. This meant it was not valid from the start. The court also decided that the creation of the Islamabad High Court itself was not valid.
As a result of this decision, Sardar Muhammad Aslam was considered to have retired as a judge of the Lahore High Court. After this, he went back to working as a private lawyer.
Death
Sardar Muhammad Aslam passed away on July 20, 2020. He was 73 years old. His death was caused by a short illness from COVID-19.
