Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mulford Landing is a neighborhood in San Leandro, a city in Alameda County, California. It's a place with a rich history, named after one of its early founders.

The Start of Mulford Landing

Mulford Landing began in 1853. It was first known as Wicks Landing. Four people started this important spot: Moses Wicks, Thomas W. Mulford, Eliphalet M. Smith, and William Smith.

They made their living by catching wild birds. These birds were trapped in the area known as Rancho San Leandro. Then, they were taken from the landing across the bay to San Francisco.

In 1868, Thomas W. Mulford bought out the other founders. He had come to California in 1849. After this, the area became known as Mulford Landing.

Mulford's Railway Station

The name Mulford was also used for a railway station. This station was on the South Pacific Coast railway line. It connected Alameda Point to Newark.

Later, in 1887, the Southern Pacific Railroad Company bought the line. They renamed the station to West San Leandro.

Mulford's Other Businesses

Thomas W. Mulford was a busy person. He also had a farm called Shore Acres. He first leased this land from José Joaquín Estudillo and later owned it.

Mulford also ran an oyster fishery. Plus, he managed a hotel and restaurant in San Leandro. This was the Estudillo House, built in 1855.

From Farm to Homes

In 1924, the Shore Acres farm faced a big challenge. Many farm animals were lost because of a widespread animal disease. This event led to changes for the Mulford family.

The farmland had been owned by the Mulford family for a long time. But in 1927, it was sold. This land was then used to create a new area of homes. This new neighborhood was called Mulford Gardens.

Finally, in 1957, Mulford Gardens became an official part of the city of San Leandro.
