Mullus is a group of fish that live in the ocean. They are part of a family called Mullidae, which are also known as goatfish. These fish include the famous red mullet. You can find them mainly in the southwest Atlantic Ocean, near South America. They also live in the Eastern Atlantic, including the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.
These fish are called benthic because they live near the bottom of the ocean. They often rest and look for food on soft surfaces like sand.

Where Mullus Fish Live
Mullus fish, or goatfish, are found in the Atlantic Ocean. This includes the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. They like to live over soft areas like sand. Here, they use their special sensitive "whiskers" to search for food.
Why Mullus Fish are Important to People
One of the most important Mullus species for fishing is the Red Mullet (Mullus barbatus). This fish is very popular in Mediterranean cooking. People often catch them using large nets called seine nets. This way of fishing can sometimes catch many fish that are ready to lay eggs.
Types of Mullus Fish
There are currently four types of Mullus fish known:
- Mullus argentinae (Argentine goatfish)
- Mullus auratus (Red goatfish)
- Mullus barbatus (Red mullet)
- Mullus surmuletus (Surmullet)
