Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome facts for kids
Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) is a serious medical condition. It happens when a person's organs are very sick and need help to work properly. This usually means two or more organs are not functioning as they should.
Doctors used to call this "multiple organ failure." However, the term MODS is now preferred because it better describes how the organs are struggling, not necessarily completely failing.
What Causes MODS?
MODS often starts because of a severe infection or a major injury. This could be from an accident or even a big surgery. Other causes include:
- Hypoperfusion: This means not enough blood is flowing to the organs.
- Hypermetabolism: This is when the body's systems are working too hard.
When these things happen, the body's defense system, called the inflammatory response, can go into overdrive. Instead of just fighting the problem, it can start to harm healthy tissues and organs.
A common cause of MODS is Sepsis. Sepsis is a very serious reaction to an infection. If sepsis gets worse, it can lead to septic shock, which is a life-threatening condition.
How MODS Develops (Stages)
Doctors have described four main stages of how MODS can develop:
- Stage 1: The body needs more fluids. Breathing might change slightly, and the person might not produce much urine. Blood sugar levels can go up, and more insulin might be needed.
- Stage 2: Breathing becomes faster, and there might not be enough oxygen in the blood. The liver might start to have problems, and there could be issues with blood.
- Stage 3: The person might go into shock. This means the body isn't getting enough blood flow. There can be problems with how the body balances acids and bases, and blood might not clot properly.
- Stage 4: The person might need medicines to keep blood pressure up. The kidneys might stop making urine. Other serious problems can develop, like issues with the large intestine or a buildup of acid in the blood.
