Mundo is a small place in Imperial County, California. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, the county manages it directly.
Mundo is located near a railroad line. It is about 7.5 miles (12 km) southeast of a place called Frink. One very interesting fact about Mundo is its elevation. It sits 190 feet (58 meters) below sea level! This makes it one of the lowest places in the United States.
A Bit of History
Mundo used to have different names. It was once called Volcano and later Volcano Springs. The name "Mundo" comes from a person named Dr. Mundo.
Dr. Mundo operated a post office in the area. This post office was called Volcano Springs. It was open for a short time, from 1901 to 1902. That's how the region got its current name.
