Munford's Story: How the City Began
Munford started as a small village in the 1850s. It grew around a church called Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1856, a post office opened there, and the village was officially named "Mt. Zion."
Choosing a New Name
The Mt. Zion post office closed in 1874. When people wanted to reopen it in 1886, the United States Post Office Department said yes, but only if the town chose a new name. This was to avoid confusion with another place called Mt. Zion in Pennsylvania.
The Post Master, G. B. Sale, asked his daughter Lola to pick a name. They decided to name the town after Colonel Richard Henry Munford, who was an important person from nearby Covington, Tennessee.
Becoming an Official City
The town officially became "Munford" by a law passed in Tennessee in 1905. Sterling Hicks Bass Sr. was elected as Munford's first mayor.
