How Tottenham Was Governed
For over a hundred years, Tottenham had different ways of being governed locally. These changes helped manage the growing area and its people.
Early Local Government: Local Board of Health
In 1850, a group called a local board of health was set up for the area known as the civil parish of Tottenham. This board was created to improve public health. It focused on things like clean water, drainage, and waste removal. These were very important for people's health at the time.
In 1875, this local board became an urban sanitary authority. It had similar jobs, but with more official powers to keep the area clean and healthy.
Tottenham and Wood Green Separate
The old parish of Tottenham used to include an area called Wood Green. But in 1888, the district was divided. Wood Green got its own local board to manage its local affairs. This meant Tottenham and Wood Green became separate administrative areas.
Becoming an Urban District
In 1894, the urban sanitary district of Tottenham changed again. It became an urban district under a new law called the Local Government Act 1894. At this time, Wood Green was officially removed from Tottenham's parish. An urban district had more responsibilities than a local board. It managed local services like roads, parks, and housing.
Becoming a Municipal Borough
Tottenham's local government changed one last time in 1934. The urban district became a municipal borough. A municipal borough had even more powers and was a more important type of local government. It was a big step up for the area.
The End of Tottenham as a Separate District
In 1965, the municipal borough of Tottenham was officially ended. Its area became part of Greater London because of the London Government Act 1963. Tottenham was then combined with other nearby districts. Together, they formed the new, larger London Borough of Haringey. This is how Tottenham is governed today.
