History of the Conservatory
How it Started
The Conservatory began in 1886. It was started by the Municipal Band of Barcelona. They needed a school to train new musicians for their band. Other cities with bands also had similar schools for the same reason.
Early Directors
The first director was ca:Josep Rodoreda. In 1896, Antoni Nicolau took over as director. Later, in 1911, a new role was created: assistant director. Enric Morera was the first assistant director until 1935.
In 1930, Lluís Millet became the new director. The Barcelona City Hall chose him.
A New Home
In 1928, the Conservatory moved into its own building. This building is located at the corner of Bruc and València streets.
Changes Over Time
Lluís Millet left his position in 1939. The next year, ca:Joan Baptista Lambert became director until 1945. During this time, the school grew. It changed from just a music school into a full conservatory. This meant it offered more advanced music education.
In 1945, a new study plan was introduced. This plan helped make sure that music studies were similar in all conservatories across Spain.
New Ideas and Growth
After Lambert passed away, Joaquim Zamacois became the director until 1965. During his time, the Conservatory connected with other music schools in Europe. Important musicians from all over Europe were invited to visit. A new department for ancient music was also started. The Barcelona Music Museum was also created during this period.
In 1952, Joan Pich i Santasusana became the assistant director. He worked to modernize the Conservatory. He also helped create more public music schools in the city. A new study plan was introduced in 1966. This plan guided professional music education for many years.
Building an Auditorium
The Conservatory planned to build an auditorium. This would allow students to perform concerts. Xavier Turull became director in 1977 and opened the new auditorium. During his time, the student orchestra became very stable. The Music Museum also moved to a new location. Steps were also taken to create the Conservatory's own Library.
Later, Maria Cateura and then ca:Marçal Gols became directors. Marçal Gols made some big changes. He helped spread out the institution's activities. He also encouraged more students to learn string instruments. After him, Pilar Figueras and then Francesca Ruiz (from 1988 to 1997) and Carme Vilà led the Conservatory.
Modern Times
In 2001, the Generalitat de Catalunya opened a new school. It was called the Superior School of Music of Catalonia (ESMuC). After this, the Municipal Conservatory of Music of Barcelona stopped teaching the highest level of music studies. Its name also changed. Many teachers from the Conservatory also started teaching at the new ESMuC.
Since then, the Conservatory has continued its work. It is now part of the Municipal Institute of Education of Barcelona. Many other municipal music schools have also been created.
