Family History
The story of the Munros of Culcairn began with George Munro, 1st of Culcairn. He was the second son of Sir Robert Munro, 5th Baronet, who was the chief of the Clan Munro. George's mother was Jean, daughter of John Forbes.
A historian named Alexander Mackenzie wrote in the 1800s about what happened when Sir Hugh Munro, 8th Baronet of Foulis passed away in 1848. If there had been a male heir from the Munro of Culcairn family, they would have become the next leader of Clan Munro. However, Mackenzie believed the Culcairn family line ended with a female relative. Because of this, the leadership of the clan went to the Munro of Culrain family instead. Charles Munro, 7th of Culrain, became the 9th Baronet of Foulis-Obsdale.
Leaders of Culcairn
Here are some of the notable people who led the Culcairn family:
George Munro, 1st of Culcairn
- George Munro, 1st of Culcairn (died 1746) was a brave soldier. He supported the British government during important historical events. These included the Jacobite rising of 1715, the Battle of Glenshiel in 1719, and the Jacobite rising of 1745. Sadly, he was accidentally shot in 1746.
John Munro, 2nd of Culcairn
- John Munro, 2nd of Culcairn was known for being very welcoming. He once showed great kindness to a Jacobite Bishop in the 1760s. He offered him "the best of Strong Ale, Claret of Vintage 49 and good Coffee made of his own Wheat."
Duncan Munro, 3rd of Culcairn
- Duncan Munro, 3rd of Culcairn was John's third son. He was a Captain-Lieutenant in the 78th Highland Regiment. Duncan was wounded at the Battle of Geldermalsen in 1795. He showed great bravery and calmness during the fight. Duncan Munro of Culcairn passed away in France in 1821. Since his only son had died before him, the male line of the Culcairn family was thought to have ended.
George Ross Munro of Culcairn
- George Ross Munro of Culcairn was a Captain in the 83rd Regiment. He died at the young age of 19 in Jamaica in 1802.
Catherine Ross Munro, 5th of Culcairn
- Catherine Ross Munro, 5th of Culcairn was the daughter of George Ross Munro. In 1815, she married Hugh Rose of Glastullich. They had children, meaning the family line continued through her.
Possible Family Members Today
Some people believe that the Munro of Culcairn family didn't actually die out. They think that because the family was living in London, England, people just assumed they were gone. These people have a ship's log that belonged to their ancestor, Thomas Munro. They believe he was Thomas, the second son of John Munro, 2nd of Culcairn.
However, this idea has not been proven. The historian Alexander Mackenzie, who wrote in the 1800s, stated that this Thomas Munro of Culcairn died at sea in 1778 and had no children. While Mackenzie's writings are not always perfect, this claim remains unconfirmed.
