Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Munros of Culrain were a smaller branch of the famous Clan Munro, a Scottish family from the Scottish Highlands. Their home was at Culrain, a place in the south of Sutherland. This was just north of the main lands of the Munro clan in Kiltearn, Easter Ross.

History of the Culrain Munros

The first Laird of Culrain was George Munro. He was the third son of George Munro, 1st of Newmore. His father was a soldier who supported the King in the 1600s. The Newmore family was also a branch of the Munro of Obsdale family.

The Culrain estate might have been named after Coleraine in Ireland. George Munro, 1st of Newmore, had been in charge there. The Newmore estate went to George Munro of Culrain's older half-brother.

Over time, the Culrain estate passed through several family members. Eventually, it was lost to Hector Munro, 8th laird of Novar. However, a later member of the Culrain family, Charles Munro, became very important.

In 1849, Charles Munro, the 7th of Culrain, took over the lands of the main Munro of Foulis family. He also received a special inherited title called a Baronetcy. This happened after Sir Hugh Munro, 8th Baronet died in 1848, and his daughter passed away eight months later.

According to a historian named Alexander Mackenzie, the Munro of Culrain family was able to get this important title. This was because there were no male family members left from the Munro of Culcairn family. They would have been next in line for the title, but their male family line had ended.
