The Fortification of Revellín, also known as the Muralla del Revellín in Spanish, is what's left of the old walls that protected the city of Logroño in Spain. Today, you can still see its western gate. These strong walls were mostly built between 1498 and 1540. They made the city's older, medieval walls even stronger.
Why the Walls Were Built
In 1521, Logroño faced a big challenge. An army from France, led by General Asparrot, attacked the city on May 25. Captain Vélez de Guevara was in charge of defending Logroño. This attack happened after a conflict called the revolt of the Comuneros in Spain.
Even though the city was under attack, it managed to hold strong. The walls and gate you see today were actually started in 1522, just one year after this important siege. This shows how vital these defenses were for Logroño.
The Walls Over Time
After the mid-1500s, the Fortification of Revellín became less important for defending the city. Because of this, the walls started to get old and damaged.
People even built private houses right up against the walls. But even with these changes, the walls have survived until today. They stand as a reminder of Logroño's history.
San Bernabé Celebration
Every year, during the San Bernabé celebrations, there's a special tradition. A group called the Fish Brotherhood gives out fish to everyone.
This tradition remembers the siege of Logroño in 1521. During that time, the people of Logroño had to eat fish from the Ebro river to survive. It's a way to honor the city's strength and how its people endured difficult times.
