Who Was Muireadhach III?
Muireadhach III was the third son of Alexander, Earl of Menteith. His family name was "Menteith," even though they were also related to the famous Stewart family. He was the third person named Muireadhach to hold the title of Earl of Menteith. An "Earl" was a powerful noble who ruled a large area of land, sometimes also called a "Mormaer" in older Scottish times. His name, Muireadhach, was spelled in many different ways back then, like Murdoc or Murdoch.
Early Life and Family
Muireadhach III was the uncle of the Earl who came before him. He was also the nephew of John de Menteith. John de Menteith was a well-known person during the Wars of Scottish Independence. These wars were a long period when Scotland fought for its freedom from England. John de Menteith is remembered for his role in the capture of William Wallace, a famous Scottish hero.
Becoming a Knight and Earl
Muireadhach III first appears in records around 1311. At that time, he was working for a nobleman in England named William Ferrers. He was like a personal assistant or attendant, called a "valet."
He became a knight in 1317 or 1318. After that, he was known as "Sir Murdac de Mentethe." We know this because his name appeared in an important document called a "charter." A charter was a written agreement or official paper.
By 1318, Muireadhach had returned to Scotland. There, he became an Earl and was close to Robert the Bruce, who was the King of Scotland. He even witnessed one of the King's charters, showing his important position.
Helping the King
It is believed that Muireadhach helped King Robert the Bruce by discovering a plan against him. This plan was led by William de Soules and others who wanted to remove the King from power. Because Muireadhach helped the King, he was rewarded. He received land that had belonged to those who were found guilty of plotting against the King.
His Final Battle
Muireadhach III's life ended during a major battle. He was killed at the Battle of Dupplin Moor on August 11, 1332.
