Murray de Vere Beauclerk, 14th Duke of St Albans (born 19 January 1939) is an English duke. From 1964 to 1988, he was known by the special title Earl of Burford. He was a member of the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament, from 1988 until 1999.
About the Duke of St Albans
Murray Beauclerk is the 14th person to hold the title of Duke of St Albans. This special title is passed down through families. He is the only child of the 13th Duke of St Albans from his first marriage.
His family has a very interesting history! The Dukes of St Albans are direct descendants of Charles II of England, a famous King of England, and Nell Gwyn, a well-known actress from that time. Their son, Charles Beauclerk, 1st Duke of St Albans, was the first to hold this title. Murray Beauclerk is also a senior member of the ancient De Vere family.
Education and Career
Murray Beauclerk went to Tonbridge School in Kent, England. After school, he studied to become an accountant. In 1962, he officially qualified as a Chartered Accountant. This means he is an expert in managing money for businesses and people.
Since 1989, he has been the Governor-General of the Royal Stuart Society. This is a group that supports the idea of having a king or queen (a monarchy). He is also a Freeman of the City of London. This is an old honour given to people who have contributed to the city. He is also a Liveryman of the Drapers' Company, which is one of London's historic trade groups.
Family Life
Murray Beauclerk has been married three times.
His first marriage was to Rosemary Frances Scoones on January 31, 1963. They had two children together:
- Lady Emma Caroline de Vere Beauclerk (born July 22, 1963)
- Charles Beauclerk, Earl of Burford (born February 22, 1965)
They divorced in 1974.
In 1974, he married Cynthia Theresa Mary. They were married until 2001, but they did not have any children together.
In 1988, Murray Beauclerk's father passed away. This is when Murray became the 14th Duke of St Albans.
On December 14, 2002, the Duke married his third wife, Gillian Anita Northam, in London.
