Mururata is a small village located in the warm, green valleys of the Bolivian Yungas. It's a very special place because it's a main center for Afro-Bolivian culture. It's also where the ceremonial Afro-Bolivian monarchy is based.
History of Mururata
The area around Mururata was first settled a long time ago, in the 1500s. During the 1600s, when Spain ruled Bolivia, many African people were brought to the region. They were forced to work in the silver mines.
Later, in the 1800s, slavery was ended. The freed slaves then created the village of Mururata. This village became a new home for them and their families.
Culture and Religion
Most people in Mururata are Catholic. They also include parts of African diaspora religions in their Christian practices. These can include rituals from traditions like Macumba and Voodoo. This mix shows the rich cultural history of the Afro-Bolivian people.
