About Mururata
Mururata is a mountain that reaches 5,871 meters (19,262 feet) high. It is known for its unique shape. Unlike many pointy mountains, Mururata has a fairly flat top. This shape is even part of local legends.
Climbing Mururata
Climbing Mururata is generally considered easier than climbing some other big mountains. Its shape does not have many difficult obstacles. This makes it a good choice for climbers who want to experience a high-altitude climb in the Andes.
Legends of Mururata
The unusual flat top of Mururata has led to interesting local stories. These legends explain how the mountain got its unique shape. They often involve other nearby mountains, like Illimani.
The Jealous Mountain
One popular legend tells of a time when Mururata was taller than its neighbor, Illimani. Illimani became very jealous of Mururata's height. In a fit of anger, Illimani supposedly chopped off Mururata's head. This is how Mururata became flat-topped.
The Angry Inca
Another story says that Mururata looked down on the Inca people. This made the Inca very angry. So, the Inca used a giant catapult to shoot off Mururata's top. The legend says this piece of Mururata flew far away. It landed in the Altiplano region. There, it formed Sajama, which is the tallest mountain in Bolivia.
