The Museu Alcoià de la Festa (MAF) is a special museum in Alcoy. Its name means Museum of the Moors and Christians of Alcoy in English. This museum is all about the amazing Moors and Christians of Alcoy festival. Visitors can explore all the exciting details and feelings of this famous event. It's a great way to learn about the festival's history and traditions.
The Museum Building
The museum is located in a grand old building. People in Valencian call it "Casal de Sant Jordi". This building was first built in the 1600s. It used to belong to important families named Jorda and Merita. In 1954, the Sant Jordi Association bought the building. They fixed it up to be their main office. The building has a lower ground floor and three floors above it.
How the Museum Started
The idea for the museum came from a tradition. Every year, the leaders of the Moorish and Christian groups would give their special costumes to the Sant Jordi Association. This association organizes the Moors and Christians festival in Alcoy.
For a long time, these costumes and other items were kept in the association's own building. This was like an old museum. In 2004, the association decided to create a brand new museum. This new museum, the MAF, officially opened its doors in 2006. It now holds a huge collection of costumes and other festival items.
