The Sequim Museum & Arts is a super cool place in downtown Sequim, Washington. It's a local history museum that you can visit for free! The museum started in 1976. It's famous for having the tusks and bones of the Manis Mastodon. These ancient bones were found at a very old human camp. This camp was on what is now the Manis Farm. It's known as one of the first times humans and mastodons met, about 13,000 years ago!

The Amazing Manis Mastodon

One of the most exciting exhibits is about the Manis Mastodon. You can see a huge mural of the mastodon. Real mastodon bones are mounted on it! There are also other items found with the bones. A video explains how archaeologists dug up these amazing finds. It tells the story of how humans lived alongside these giant creatures.

Step Back in Time: Local History

The museum also has many old photos from the 1800s. These pictures show how important the dairy industry was back then. You can see how people lived and worked. There are also models of the Mosquito Fleet boats. These boats were the main way people traveled and moved goods long ago. Records from the Dungeness Wharf, Washington Harbor, and Port Williams show how busy these ports once were.

Art, Boats, and More!

The Cowan Family Collection is a special exhibit. It shows different natural history items that change over time. The Judith McInnes Tozzer Gallery features art from local artists. This art changes often, so there's always something new to see! You can also find an exhibit about "The Boys in the Boat." This tells the story of Joe Rantz and his gold medal rowing team from the 1936 Olympics. Plus, there are vintage cars and tractors, a dairy farm display, and a logging exhibit. The museum also has an exhibit about the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe.

A Look at the Museum's History

The museum has grown a lot over the years. Its first exhibit building opened on May 10, 1979. This was in the old Post Office building on W. Cedar Street. In 1992, the museum joined with the Peninsula Cultural Arts Center. They became the Museum & Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Later, in 1995, the museum took over the historic Dungeness School. The current main exhibit building opened on July 6, 2019. In 2019, the museum officially changed its name to the Sequim Museum & Arts.

Where to Find the Museum

The main Exhibit Center is located at 544 N. Sequim Ave. in Sequim. The museum's offices are also in the DeWitt Building at the same address. This building also holds the Whatton Library for Historical Research. You can find the Vollenweider Archives there too. The Robert Cooper Photography Studio and the John & Inez Cowan Collection are also housed here. The historic Dungeness School is located at 2781 Towne Rd.

Supporting the Museum

The Sequim Museum & Arts helps take care of several historic places. These include the Dungeness School, the Captain John Morris House, and the Washington Harbor Schoolhouse. The museum is a private non-profit group. This means it relies on people like you! It gets money from memberships, donations, and grants. It does not get money from the county or city.
