The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale is an exciting art museum located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It started way back in 1958 as the Fort Lauderdale Art Center. Today, the museum is housed in a large, modern building designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes. This building was finished in 1986, and a new section was added in 2001.
The museum has a huge main area for showing art, plus a special outdoor space for sculptures. Unlike other big museums nearby, this museum focuses a lot on art from the 20th and 21st centuries. However, its collection also includes older works from the 19th century.
The museum has more than 7,500 pieces of art. This includes a large collection of ceramics and prints by the famous artist Pablo Picasso. There is also a special collection of Latin American and Cuban art. This collection shows the work of over 125 artists. The museum also has the biggest collection in North America of art from the Northern European CoBrA art movement. You can also find many pieces of African and Oceanic Tribal Arts, and art from the Americas. The museum's collections are especially strong in art from South Florida and the Caribbean region.
The museum started working with Nova Southeastern University in 2008.
Glackens Wing: A Special Art Collection
In 2001, the museum grew bigger by adding a new section called the Glackens Wing. This wing was built to hold a collection of over 500 artworks by an American painter named William Glackens. He was known for his realistic style of painting.
This special exhibit is the largest collection of his work anywhere. It includes his very first known painting, called Philadelphia Landscape, which he painted in 1893. It also has his last completed painting, White Rose and Other Flowers, from 1937.
Tutankhamun Exhibit: A Journey to Ancient Egypt
In December 2005, a very special traveling exhibit came to the Museum of Art. This exhibit featured amazing items from the tomb of the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The museum was one of only four places in the United States to host this exhibit. It was the first time these treasures had toured the U.S. in over 25 years.
During the four months the exhibit was in Fort Lauderdale, more than 700,000 tickets were sold. Many people came to see these incredible pieces of history.
