History of the Museum Building
The building where the museum is now was designed by an architect named William H. Shimmelphening. It was built way back in 1920. This building was part of a bigger hospital complex called the San Juan Municipal Hospital.
The building worked as a hospital until 1966. That's when most of the hospital moved to a new place called Centro Médico de Río Piedras. After that, from 1966 to 1975, the building was used as offices. The Puerto Rico Department of Transportation and Public Works had their offices there.
How the Museum Started
The idea for the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico began in 1995. The Puerto Rico Tourism Company helped make it happen. They got money from the Government Development Bank for Puerto Rico. Instead of tearing down the old hospital building, they decided to keep it. They made the old building a part of the new museum. The museum officially opened its doors on July 1, 2000.
