The Museum of Art of Puerto Rico (often called MAPR) is a cool art museum located in Santurce, a neighborhood in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It has 18 different rooms where you can see amazing art! What's really neat is that the museum is inside an old, historic building. This building used to be the San Juan Municipal Hospital.
History of the Museum Building
The building where the museum is now was designed by an architect named William H. Shimmelphening. It was built way back in 1920. This building is the only part left of what used to be the San Juan Municipal Hospital.
The building worked as a hospital until 1966. That's when most of the hospital moved to a new place called Centro Médico de Río Piedras. After that, from 1966 to 1975, the building was used as offices. The Puerto Rico Department of Transportation and Public Works had their offices there.
The idea to create the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico started in 1995. The Puerto Rico Tourism Company helped make this happen. They got money from the Government Development Bank for Puerto Rico. Instead of tearing down the old hospital building, they decided to keep it and make it part of the new museum. The museum officially opened in the year 2000.
