A New Home for History
For many years, from 1985 to 2018, the Museum of Boulder was located in a historic house. This house, called the Harbeck-Bergheim house, was near the University of Colorado Boulder campus. In April 2013, the museum bought a new, bigger building. This building was once a Masonic Lodge, located at Broadway and Pine streets.
Moving and Renovating
The museum started making changes to its new building in 2017. These changes were big, turning the old lodge into a modern museum. The new Museum of Boulder officially opened its doors on May 19, 2018. This new location gives the museum more space to share Boulder's history.
How the New Museum Was Funded
Making the new museum building ready cost a lot of money. Many groups and people helped out. In 2015, the Boettcher Foundation gave the museum $75,000. The National Endowment for the Humanities also gave a large grant of $500,000.
Voters in Boulder also helped in 2014. They approved $4 million from a special tax called the Community, Culture and Safety Tax. In October 2017, a generous person named Stephen Tebo donated $1.5 million. His donation was so helpful that he was given the chance to name the new museum building.
Preserving Boulder's Past
The Museum of Boulder works closely with the Boulder Carnegie Library. Together, they help keep safe a huge collection of historical items. This collection includes over 900,000 old photographs and important documents. The museum also has more than 45,000 historical objects. These items help tell the story of Boulder and its people.
