Discovering MOCA's History
MOCA started small in 1981. Back then, it was called the Center for Contemporary Art and only had one art room. In 1995, MOCA started its own collection of art. Then, in 1996, it opened its awesome new building.
Who Led MOCA?
From 1993 to 2013, a smart art expert named Bonnie Clearwater was in charge of MOCA. She thought MOCA was a great place for learning. In 2012, MOCA even won a special award called the IMLS National Medal for Museum and Library Service!
In January 2018, the City of North Miami chose Chana Budgazad Sheldon to be MOCA's new director. She used to lead another art space called Locust Projects in Miami.
Amazing Art Shows
MOCA has shown art from many cool artists. Some of these artists include Bill Viola, Tracey Emin, Edouard Duval-Carrié, Virginia Overton, Purvis Young, Wangechi Mutu, and Michael Richards.
In 2008, MOCA received a big gift of $5 million. This money helped them put on more art shows, create new programs for the public, improve school programs, and host talks, performances, and film screenings.
Optic Nerve Film Series
MOCA also has a special film series called "Optic Nerve." It's a great place for new artists to show their films. More than 220 artists have shared their work in this series, and for many, it was their very first time showing their art to the public!
A New Art Group Forms
In late 2014, some people from MOCA's board decided to start a new art group. They created the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami's Design District. After some discussions, MOCA kept about 70% of its 700 artworks. The new group received about 200 pieces.
MOCA's Community Programs
MOCA has many different programs to reach out to the community. These programs help people of all ages learn about and enjoy contemporary art.
