How MOCA Started
Early Days and Growth
MOCA started small in 1981. It was first called the Center for Contemporary Art. It only had one gallery space back then. In 1995, the museum began to build its own collection of art. Then, in 1996, a brand new building for the museum opened.
A Focus on Education
From 1993 to 2013, Bonnie Clearwater was the director of MOCA. She was an art historian and a curator. Bonnie Clearwater believed MOCA should be an "education museum." This meant it focused on teaching people about art. In 2012, MOCA even won a special award for its great work.
Amazing Art Shows
MOCA has shown art by many talented artists. Some of these include Bill Viola, Tracey Emin, Edouard Duval-Carrié, and Purvis Young. In 2008, MOCA received a big gift of $5 million. This money helped the museum put on new art shows. It also helped create new programs for the public and schools. They also hosted talks, performances, and movie nights.
Optic Nerve Film Series
MOCA's "Optic Nerve" program became very popular. It was a special place for new artists who made films. More than 220 artists have shown their work in this series. Many of them shared their films with the public for the very first time at MOCA.
Changes at the Museum
In 2014, some people from the museum's board started a new art group. It was called the Institute of Contemporary Art. In the end, MOCA kept most of its art collection. About 70% of its 700 artworks stayed at MOCA. The new group received about 200 pieces. In 2018, Chana Budgazad Sheldon became the new director of MOCA. She used to lead another art space called Locust Projects.
Outreach Programs
MOCA has many different programs to reach out to the community. These programs help more people learn about and enjoy art.
