Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Museum of the City of Merida (Spanish: Museo de la Ciudad de Mérida) is an important museum located in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. It displays many historical items and archaeological pieces that tell the story of the city. You can learn about Merida from ancient times, even before the Spanish arrived, all the way to the present day. The building where the museum is located is also very old and special, as it was built during a time known as the Porfiriate period.

History of the Museum Building

The building that houses the Museum of the City is very important to Merida. It stands out because of its beautiful architectural style and its rich history. This grand building, known as the Federal Palace, first opened its doors on May 5, 1908. This was during the time of Governor Enrique Muñoz Arístegui, near the end of the Porfiriate period (a time when Porfirio Díaz was president of Mexico). Over the years, this building has been home to different offices, including those for telegraphs, postal services, and even courts.

The building was designed and built by a military engineer named Salvador Echegaray. It has a Neoclassical style, which means it looks like ancient Greek and Roman buildings. It also has a touch of French style and even some modern details in its walls and metalwork. Inside the museum, you can see objects that show what the building was like when it was used for the postal service.
