Music in Colonial Mexico facts for kids
The Colonial Mexican Period was a time in history from 1521 to 1821. This was when Mexico was known as New Spain and was ruled by a "Vice-Regency" (like a governor). During this period, European music started to become popular in Mexico soon after the Spanish arrived.
This happened during the Late-Renaissance period of Western Music. As time went on, Mexican music continued to follow European styles, through the Baroque and Classical music periods. It's important to know that even though much of the music was like European music, some unique Mexican songs also appeared. These songs mixed native Mexican languages with European musical styles, starting as early as the 1500s and continuing throughout the colonial period.
Most of the old music that still exists today is sacred music. This means it was written for church choirs and orchestras. These musical pieces were found in big churches called cathedrals in cities like Mexico City, Puebla, Oaxaca, Morelia, and Guatemala City (which was also part of New Spain back then). There are also some collections of everyday music, not just church music. For example, the Códice Saldívar has guitar music, and the Eleanor Hague Manuscript is kept at the Southwestern Museum in Los Angeles.
