Muskallonge Lake State Park is a fun place for outdoor activities! It's located in Luce County, Michigan, right between the big Lake Superior and the smaller Muskallonge Lake. This park covers about 217 acres. Long ago, Native American people camped here. Later, a special station that helped save lives on the lake was also located here.
Park History
This park is found near where an old town called Deer Park used to be. In the 1800s, Deer Park was a "mill town." This means it had a big factory that cut down trees to make wood. But once all the trees were gone, the town almost disappeared.
The park is also home to the spot where a United States Life-Saving Service station once stood. This service was like an early version of the Coast Guard. Its job was to rescue sailors and ships in trouble on the Great Lakes. The station here was called Station Muskallong Lake. It was one of five such stations along the "Shipwreck Coast" of Lake Superior. This part of the lake was known for many shipwrecks. The station helped people from 1876 until 1909. In 1957, the land became a state park.
